Our journey continues! Today, we are going to visit another of our farms in Esmeraldas: The Hacienda “Cinthya”. In particular, we are going to experience firsthand an Ecocert visit followed by a discussion with the administrator of the farm Hernan Martinez about organic farming.
The Hacienda “`Cinthya” has been part of the “Familia Organica” for more than two years. Throughout the years, Hacienda “Cinthya” has managed switching from conventional farming methods to organic and sustainable ones, achieving several certifications in the process! In this video, Mr. Martinez talks us about his experience with organic farming.
In a nutshell, organic farming excludes the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. In order to eliminate the use of pesticides, alternative natural methods that are organic and sustainable have to be used such as organic compost or green manure. Mr. Martinez talks about the differences between conventional and organic farming, which involves switching from chemical fertilizer to natural and organic products. It involves adapting and teaching the farmers to fit their jobs.
In addition, in this video there are certain methods presented to avoid cross-contamination in case conventional farms surround the organic farm. One method is creating and using live fences to create natural barriers, which defend the organic production from any contamination from the chemicals used in the conventional farming, resulting in 100% organic products.
Natural Habitats offers support, guidance and advice through our agronomists. We help our farmers (in this case Hacienda “Cinthya”) by providing appropriate training and solutions to the problems encountered.
Natural Habitats is more focused on creating a common front with the farmers through our “Familia Organica” in order to share our values of: empowerment of the farmers to improve their livelihood, protecting the world’s resources and people’s health, preserving heritage and cultural tradition and sharing our passion for an organic and social world! “Familia Organica” is more than a family, it is an organic and sustainable way of life!
We would like to thank the Hacienda “Cinthya” for the fantastic job they do and the great care they take in order to be provide high quality organic palm fruits! To find out more please watch this video
