Bud rot disease or PC (pudrición del cogollo) has adversely affected some of the palm oil plantations in Ecuador, the country where Natural Habitats Group is working with small farm holders to produce organic and sustainable palm oil.
It is estimated that 5% of the Latin America’s total palm oil trees have been killed due to the spread of PC. Till now the cause and effect relationship between the disease and the oil palm plantations is not been fully quantified or validated and a comprehensive view of the problem is not being undertaken.
Natural Habitats group has started a research program with National and International experts to develop a more holistic approach to prevent the spread of the disease. Our qualified agronomists at palm plantations in Ecuador are continuously working to educate farmers in good agricultural practices by implementing integrated control techniques in order to maintain biodiversity equilibrium in and around our oil palm plantations.
In spite of the current externalities like PC disease, Natural Habitats is fully committed to its core value of organic production of palm oil. We are confident that soon we will be able to deal with PC in an environmentally safe and socially just way. All our stakeholders will be updated on this issue at the timely manner.
