Sierra Leone is considered one of the poorest countries in the world, it ranked 180th out of 187 countries on the Human Development Index 2011 . A large proportion of the youth in the country are unemployed or underemployed which presents a threat to sustainable peace and growth of the country. The recent Ebola outbreak has further worsen the economic situation of the country and had an acute repercussion on the employment and hence on the food security of the population.
Natural Habitats, in order to help Sierra Leone combat its severe economic condition, have developed local oil palm nurseries in the region of its operation. These nurseries contributes effectively to the local economies by generating jobs for the people of Sierra Leone and in turn contributes to the over all sustainable development of the region.
We work with smallholder farmers of Sierra Leone in more than 112 villages with the aim of social development and economic empowerment. Our operations are helping smallholder farmers to complement subsistence farming and work towards a better livelihood and resilience in the country..
